A Holographic Digital Twin of the Dholera Smart City Masterplan

Project Overview
How do you show people a city that does not exist yet? When the Dholera Special Investment Region set out to present India’s first greenfield smart city, a slide deck was never going to do it justice. ViitorX built a holographic digital twin of the Dholera masterplan: a lightweight, interactive 3D hologram that floats above a holo table and sits over real GIS maps, which decision-makers explored at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2022 and Defence Expo 2022. Zoom in, pan across, switch between infrastructure layers, and the future of the city answers back.
Objective
DSIRDA wanted more than a render. The goal was a virtual walkthrough of the smart city that was genuinely informative and easy for senior stakeholders to read. It needed to:
- Present the full masterplan, development phases, and key metrics in one view.
- Let users interact directly with the model and call up KPIs on demand.
- Run smoothly on a holographic holo table without losing visual quality.
- Make a vast, abstract urban planning vision feel tangible to investors and officials.
Challenges
Turning architectural and GIS data into a live hologram is harder than it looks:
- Heavy architectural files had to become lightweight 3D models without losing fidelity.
- Infrastructure layers, electricity, water, and disaster management, had to be legible at a glance.
- Audio, video, and voice-over needed to be woven in without cluttering the view.
- The whole experience had to feel effortless for a non-technical dignitary to drive.
Solutions: Building the 3D Hologram
We built the experience as a true digital twin and tuned it for the room it would be shown in. It came together as:
- A lightweight 3D digital twin: We rebuilt the masterplan as optimised 3D models, displayed holographically over GIS maps for a realistic, layered view of the city.
- Interactive KPI navigation: A custom interface let users zoom, pan, and call up specific KPIs and infrastructure networks on demand.
- Layered infrastructure: Electricity, water, and disaster-management networks were modelled as explorable layers, so planners could read the city system by system.
- Guided storytelling: Integrated audio, video, and voice-over carried the narrative, keeping a complex plan clear and engaging.
