A Holographic Stage Experience for Women-Led Development at G20 Goa

Project Overview

Women-led development was one of the defining themes of India’s G20 presidency: the argument that development led by women is not a welfare line item but a growth strategy. ViitorX was asked to make that idea stand up in a room. For the ministerial track at Goa in 2023, we created ECHO, a holographic stage experience for the Ministry of Women and Child Development, produced in association with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Ministry of Culture and NIFT. A life-size virtual host appears in mid air and introduces the women and the initiatives behind the movement, organised around four pillars: culture, health, education and livelihood. We handled concept, narrative, 3D production, motion design, sound and on-site commissioning, and the installation ran unattended through the full summit programme.

Objective

The brief was diplomatic as much as creative. The experience had to:

  • Present women-led development to visiting delegations as a lived story rather than a statistic board.
  • Read clearly to an audience of ministers, delegates and international press with no shared language of reference.
  • Hold its own on a summit floor, where every pavilion is competing for a few seconds of attention.
  • Run continuously and unattended across the whole programme, with no operator standing by.

Challenges

A G20 venue is an unforgiving place to install a 3D hologram:

  • Ambient light and open sightlines work against holographic projection, so the content had to be designed for contrast rather than corrected for it afterwards.
  • The narrative had to compress four national policy areas into a piece short enough for a delegate walking past.
  • Content and creative direction had to be agreed across four institutions working together on the same piece.
  • A summit venue is not a place to iterate, so the piece had to arrive finished and ready to run.

Solutions

We built ECHO as a single, tightly scripted piece rather than a loop of clips:

  • A life-size virtual host: A human-scale presenter appears in mid air and speaks directly to the visitor, which turns a holographic display into something closer to being addressed than being shown.
  • Four pillars as neon vignettes: Culture, health, education and livelihood each get their own stylised vignette, so the abstract policy frame of women-led development becomes four things a viewer can actually picture.
  • Content mastered for the hologram, not adapted to it: We produced the 3D content, motion design and sound specifically for holographic projection, controlling contrast, silhouette and depth so the figures hold up under exhibition lighting.
  • An unattended on-site installation: We commissioned the display in the venue and set it to run the full programme without an operator, which matters when the floor is busy and access is restricted.

Why a Hologram Suits Public Diplomacy

State messaging usually reaches a delegate as a panel, a pamphlet or a speech, and most of it slides off. A hologram for events works differently because it puts a person in the room. Presence is what makes the difference: a life-size figure speaking at eye level is read as an encounter, not as content, and encounters are what people describe afterwards. For a theme like women-led development, where the argument is fundamentally about people rather than programmes, that shift is not decorative. It is the whole point. It is also why an immersive exhibition piece can carry a policy idea across a language barrier better than a translated handout.

Results & Impact

  • Delivered ECHO as a life-size holographic stage experience for the G20 Summit 2023 ministerial track in Goa.
  • Presented India’s women-led development story to G20 delegations, ministerial representatives, international press and invited dignitaries.
  • Structured a national policy theme into four legible pillars: culture, health, education and livelihood.
  • Produced the full creative chain in house: concept, narrative, 3D content, motion design and sound.
  • Mastered the content for holographic display and commissioned the installation on site.
  • Ran unattended across the entire summit programme, with no operator required on the floor.

Conclusion

ECHO was made for a specific room and a specific week, but the method travels. When a government needs an idea to land with people who did not come to hear about it, a 3D hologram gives that idea a face, a voice and a scale that a screen cannot. ViitorX built the piece end to end, from the first line of narrative to the last cable in Goa, and we continue to build holographic experiences for institutions that need to be understood quickly by an audience that is only passing through.
