A Life-Size Hologram of Kaziranga’s One Horned Rhino for Advantage Assam 2.0

Project Overview

Most conservation messaging asks people to read. This one asks them to meet someone. For Advantage Assam 2.0, the Investment and Infrastructure Summit held at Khanapara in Guwahati on 25 and 26 February 2025, ViitorX partnered with the Government of Assam and Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve to build a life-size holographic wildlife experience. Visitors to the pavilion were greeted by Gauri, a Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, standing at full scale with her calf Krishna beside her. She tells her own story, then the story of her home, then the story of how her species came back. The piece was showcased to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, during his visit to the summit exhibition.

Objective

Assam had two things to say at once, and a passing delegate to say them to:

  • Introduce the one horned rhino as an individual rather than as a species entry on a board.
  • Convey the scale and ecological richness of Kaziranga National Park to an audience of investors and delegates.
  • Tell a wildlife conservation success story honestly, including how close it came to going the other way.
  • End on a practical appeal: visit Assam, and choose ethical tourism when you do.

Challenges

A first-person animal narrative is easy to get wrong, and a summit floor is a hard place to get it right:

  • A Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros at life size is a large, heavy, subtle animal, and photoreal 3D at that scale leaves nowhere for shortcuts to hide.
  • The script had to carry natural history, geography and a conservation argument without turning into a lecture.
  • Holographic projection had to hold up on an exhibition floor rather than in a controlled darkened room.
  • The installation would be seen by the Prime Minister and by heads of state, ministers and global investors, so it had to be right the first time.

Solutions

We wrote it, built it and commissioned it as a single piece of storytelling:

  • First-person narration: Gauri introduces herself: the keratin horn, the armour-plated hide that hides a peaceful grazer, the mud baths. Hearing an animal speak in the first person changes the register from information to introduction.
  • Photoreal 3D animal production: We modelled, textured and animated both rhinos for life-size presentation, where weight, gait and skin behaviour do most of the persuading.
  • Kaziranga as a living system: The narrative opens out to Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, some 1,300 sq km around a UNESCO World Heritage core, shared with tigers, elephants, wild buffalo, swamp deer and Gangetic dolphins, alongside 530 bird species and 440 butterfly species, and renewed each year by the flood of the Brahmaputra.
  • The conservation turn: The piece states plainly that the species was once nearly lost to poaching and has since passed 3,000 in Assam through frontline forest staff, surveillance and community effort, then closes with a direct appeal to visit and to choose ethical tourism.
  • On-site holographic mastering and commissioning: We mastered the content for the holographic display and integrated it in the pavilion ourselves, with motion graphics and voice-over produced in house.

Why a Hologram Serves Conservation

Wildlife conservation communication has a persistent problem: the animals it is about are absent from the rooms where decisions get made. Photographs and film are seen at screen scale, and scale is exactly the quality that makes a rhinoceros memorable. A 3D hologram restores it. Standing next to a full-size Gauri, an investor or a minister gets a fact that no infographic delivers, which is how much animal is actually at stake. That is also why the piece works as tourism marketing without feeling like it: the invitation to visit Kaziranga National Park lands harder when it comes from the resident.

Results & Impact

  • Delivered a life-size holographic wildlife experience for the Assam pavilion at Advantage Assam 2.0, Guwahati, February 2025.
  • Showcased to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, during his visit to the summit exhibition.
  • Reached heads of state, Union and State ministers, global investors, delegations and general summit footfall.
  • Produced photoreal 3D versions of a Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros and her calf for full-scale presentation.
  • Carried Kaziranga’s ecological story, from some 1,300 sq km of protected habitat to 530 bird species and 440 butterfly species.
  • Told the recovery of the one horned rhino past 3,000 in Assam as the work of frontline forest staff, surveillance and communities.
  • Delivered the full chain in house: concept, script, creative direction, 3D production, motion graphics, voice-over and on-site commissioning.

Conclusion

Assam did not need another slide about biodiversity. It needed a delegate to stop walking, feel something, and go home with the name of a park. Gauri did that job. ViitorX built the experience from the first draft of the script to the last day of the summit, and it remains one of the clearest demonstrations we have of what holographic projection is genuinely good for: making something absent feel present enough to matter.
