VR Haircut Training: Practise the Cut Without Wasting a Wig
A VR training simulator that recreates the paper wig used in hairdressing schools, so trainees practise complex cuts with virtual scissors, again and again.
Project Overview
Hairdressing students learn on paper wigs, and every practice cut uses one up. ViitorX built a VR haircut training simulator that removes that limit entirely. Inside virtual reality, we recreated the exact paper wig used in hairdressing training institutes, down to how it behaves under the blade, so trainees can practise the same complex cut as many times as they need with virtual scissors. It is vocational training without the running cost, or the waste.
Objective
The simulator had to teach a feel-based craft without burning through materials. It needed to:
- Recreate the paper wig used in hairdressing schools faithfully in VR.
- Let trainees practise complex cuts repeatedly with virtual scissors.
- Guide learners step by step, like a task-based game.
- Remove the material cost and waste of physical practice.
Challenges
Teaching a hands-on skill in virtual reality is harder than it sounds:
- Real paper-wig practice consumes materials with every single attempt.
- Cutting is a feel-based skill, hard to teach from a manual.
- Virtual scissors and paper had to interact convincingly to be useful.
- Trainees need structure, not just a free-form sandbox.
Solutions
We focused on making the cut feel real, then built the lesson around it. It includes:
- A true-to-life paper wig: Using mesh modelling, we recreated the exact paper wig from hairdressing training institutes, so the virtual material behaves like the real thing.
- Virtual scissors: Mesh-modification techniques make the cutting interaction between scissors and paper feel close to genuine.
- Step-by-step guidance: The whole simulation is structured as task-based training, guiding trainees through each stage like a strategy game.
- Endless repetition: Because nothing is consumed, learners repeat a difficult cut as often as they need to master it.
How It Works
A trainee puts on the headset and faces the same paper wig they would in class. The simulator walks them through a cut step by step: position, angle, motion. They make the cut with virtual scissors, see the result, and if it is wrong, they simply start again, with no wasted wig and no waiting. Each completed task moves them to the next, building skill the way a game builds levels.
Results & Impact
- Recreates the exact paper wig from training institutes inside virtual reality.
- Lets trainees practise complex cuts endlessly with virtual scissors, nothing consumed.
- Structures learning as step-by-step simulation training, like a game.
- Removes the material cost and waste of physical paper-wig practice.
- Makes virtual reality training a practical, repeatable part of vocational skills education.
Conclusion
Mastery comes from repetition, and repetition is exactly what consumable-based training cannot afford. By rebuilding the paper wig in VR, ViitorX gave hairdressing trainees unlimited attempts at the skills that matter, and gave their institutes a way to teach craft without the constant cost. Practice, after all, should be free.
