Swachh Bharat in Mixed Reality: Explaining a Mission to the World
A Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality experience of the Swachh Bharat Mission, presented to the Prime Minister of India and the UN Secretary-General.
Project Overview
How do you explain a nationwide sanitation mission to a room that includes the Prime Minister of India and the UN Secretary-General? ViitorX, with partner Moving Pixel, built a Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality experience for the Government of India that did exactly that. Created for the Swachh Bharat Divas exhibition in New Delhi, it let wearers step into the Swachh Bharat Mission, interacting with virtual waste bins, sanitation equipment, and voice-over-led animations that explained public toilet hygiene, waste management, and household practices.
Objective
The demonstration had to make a vital public mission both clear and unforgettable. It needed to:
- Explain the Swachh Bharat Mission's goals and achievements in mixed reality.
- Cover public toilet hygiene, waste management, and household sanitation interactively.
- Engage a diverse audience, from global dignitaries to the general public.
- Deliver a flawless, high-profile presentation for world leaders.
Challenges
A civic topic on the highest-profile stage brings unusual pressure:
- Sanitation is a vital but unglamorous topic to make genuinely engaging.
- Sanitation is a vital but unglamorous topic to make genuinely engaging.
- Complex mission achievements had to be digestible in minutes.
- A presentation to the PM and UN chief left zero margin for glitches.
Solutions
We turned a policy story into something you could reach out and touch. It included:
- Microsoft HoloLens MR A holographic environment let users interact with virtual elements representing real sanitation practices.
- Voice-over animations Engaging animations with narration explained the mission's objectives and achievements clearly.
- Interactive demonstration Users handled virtual waste bins and sanitation equipment, learning by doing rather than watching.
- Flawless delivery Built on Unity with the HoloLens toolkit, the experience ran glitch-free for its high-profile debut.
On the World Stage
The demonstration premiered at Swachh Bharat Divas in New Delhi, and its first audience was about as high-stakes as it gets: the Prime Minister of India and the UN Secretary-General among the dignitaries. For a few minutes, a national hygiene mission became something a world leader could explore in mixed reality, gesture by gesture. It put the Swachh Bharat Mission, and the technology behind it, on a genuinely international stage.
Results & Impact
- Presented the Swachh Bharat Mission in mixed reality to the PM of India and the UN Secretary-General.
- Explained sanitation practices through interactive Microsoft HoloLens demonstrations.
- Made complex mission achievements digestible for a diverse audience.
- Raised public awareness and international visibility for the mission.
- Showed how mixed reality can carry serious civic and social messages.
Conclusion
Some messages matter too much to be left to a slideshow. By rebuilding the Swachh Bharat Mission as a HoloLens mixed reality experience, ViitorX helped the Government of India turn public awareness into participation, even for the most powerful audience in the room. It is proof that immersive technology can serve a cause, not just a brand.
