Gwalior Airport: A Holographic Twin of the New Terminal

Project Overview

When a public body unveils a piece of national infrastructure, the moment has to land. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), the statutory body under the Ministry of Civil Aviation that runs the country’s airports, wanted the new Gwalior Airport terminal to feel real long before construction finished. ViitorX built a holographic digital twin of the terminal masterplan: a true-to-plan 3D hologram of the building and its phases that visitors could see floating above a table and explore at their own pace. It was unveiled at the foundation-stone ceremony for the new terminal, in front of senior union and state dignitaries, so the people approving the project could look at the finished vision rather than a flat rendering.

Objective

AAI did not want a video that plays and ends. They wanted a living model of the airport that officials and the public could engage with. The experience needed to:

  • Present the new terminal masterplan as an accurate, explorable 3D hologram.
  • Show each construction phase clearly, so viewers understand what comes when.
  • Carry live data feeds, so the model reflects real information rather than a fixed render.
  • Work as a centrepiece at a high-profile public ceremony, with no room for technical hiccups.

Challenges

A government unveiling raises the bar in ways a private demo does not:

  • A full airport masterplan is heavy with detail, and a holographic display has to stay light enough to render smoothly and read clearly.
  • Phasing is the whole story for an under-construction airport, so the model had to make sequence and scale obvious at a glance.
  • Feeding live data into a holographic projection without slowing it down is a real engineering balance.
  • The reveal happened once, on a fixed date, in front of decision-makers, so the experience had to be dependable the first time.

Solutions

We built the twin to be accurate, light, and genuinely interactive. It includes:

  • A lightweight 3D holographic model: The terminal masterplan was rebuilt as an optimised 3D hologram that holds detail while staying smooth on the holographic display, using Axiom holographic technology.
  • Phase-by-phase walkthroughs: Viewers move through the planned phases of the terminal, seeing how the airport grows over time rather than only its final state.
  • Live data feeds: The model connects to real-time information, so what people see reflects current data instead of a frozen snapshot.
  • Interactive, self-paced exploration: Officials and guests control the holographic projection themselves, turning, zooming, and stepping through the plan at the ceremony.

Why It Worked on the Ceremony Floor

A foundation-stone ceremony is about confidence. People are committing to something that does not exist yet, and they want to believe in it. A holographic digital twin turns an abstract masterplan into something you can stand around and point at, which is exactly what a room of decision-makers responds to. Because the model carried live data and showed each phase, it read as a working plan rather than marketing, and that is what made it the right centrepiece for a public infrastructure milestone.
