Dhari Experience Centre: A Digital Journey Into Gir Forest

Project Overview

Gir is the last home of the Asiatic lion, and the Dhari Experience Centre lets visitors step inside its world without disturbing a blade of grass. Built by ViitorX for the Gujarat Forest Department, it is the state’s first forest-department-led digital experience centre: an immersive journey through Gir’s biodiversity, its changing seasons, and the culture that surrounds the forest. Its guide is a realistic lion, narrating the story of its own home.

Objective

The centre had to make people care about Gir, not just learn facts about it. It needed to:

  • Bring Gir’s biodiversity, seasons, and conservation story to life for every visitor.
  • Engage all ages through immersive storytelling rather than static displays.
  • Build eco-awareness in a way that is memorable and emotionally resonant.
  • Reflect the culture and heritage of the Gir region alongside its wildlife.

Challenges

Bringing a living forest indoors is a tall order:

  • Conservation messaging often struggles to hold a visitor’s attention.
  • A forest’s scale, seasons, and wildlife are hard to convey inside a building.
  • The experience had to speak to children and adults at the same time.
  • It needed to feel authentic to Gir, not like a generic nature display.

Solutions

We built the centre around immersion and a single, charismatic guide. It includes:

  • Lion-narrated projection: An immersive projection mapping experience is narrated by a lifelike lion, telling the story of Gir from the inside.
  • Interactive touchscreen kiosks: Visitors explore wildlife facts and seasonal insights at their own pace through interactive kiosks.
  • Gamified learning: Playful learning modules turn conservation lessons into something younger visitors actively enjoy.
  • Cultural storytelling: The experience weaves in the heritage of the Gir region, grounding the wildlife in its human context.

Inside the Experience

A visit begins in the forest’s hush, then the lion appears and begins to speak. It walks you through Gir across the seasons, the dry months, the monsoon, the return of the herds, while touchscreens invite you to dig deeper into any animal or habitat that catches your eye. For younger visitors, the lessons become games. By the end, Gir feels less like a place on a map and more like somewhere you have already been.

Results & Impact

  • Delivered Gujarat’s first forest-department-led digital experience centre.
  • Brought Gir’s biodiversity and seasons to life through an immersive experience.
  • Guided visitors with a lifelike lion narrator across a projection-led journey.
  • Engaged younger audiences through gamified, interactive kiosk learning.
  • Turned conservation and regional culture into a memorable visitor centre experience.

Conclusion

You protect what you love, and you love what you have met. By letting visitors walk through Gir guided by its most famous resident, ViitorX helped the Gujarat Forest Department turn a conservation message into an experience that stays with people. The Dhari Experience Centre does not just describe the forest, it introduces you to it.
