Interactive Digital Experiences for CSMVS “Network of the Past”

Project Overview

ViitorX partnered with Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) to power the digital layer of their landmark "Networks of the Past" exhibition. Featuring over 250 archaeological artefacts from 14 museums across 6 countries, the gallery traced ancient exchanges from the Harappan to the Gupta period. We delivered four bespoke interactive digital experiences, transforming passive viewing into active, curious discovery that beautifully complemented the physical historical collections.

Objective

  • Deepen Interpretation: Complement the museum's rich physical collection with immersive digital experiences that enhance visitor understanding without overshadowing artefacts.
  • Visualize the Past: Bring complex ancient trade routes and cross-civilizational exchanges to life through interactive, hands-on media.
  • Modernize Accessibility: Make dense archaeological narratives highly accessible to diverse audiences, including school students and international visitors.
  • Digitize Feedback: Replace manual feedback collection with seamless digital capture to generate real-time, actionable exhibition data.

Challenges

  • Contextual Limitations:  Physical artefacts alone could not adequately convey the massive scale and full scope of ancient global trade systems.
  • Fragmented Information:  Traditional museum display panels offered static, fragmented information lacking the depth and interactivity needed for modern audiences.
  • Low Engagement:  Engaging younger, tech-savvy visitors required a far more dynamic and participatory format than standard exhibits provided.
  • Inefficient Data Collection:  Visitor feedback was collected manually via paper forms, proving slow, inconsistent, and impossible to analyze effectively.

Solutions

  • Rosetta Stone Digital Twin:  A tablet-based kiosk allowing visitors to tap Hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Ancient Greek scripts for contextual decipherment stories, featuring a gamified "Draw the Hieroglyph" tool for younger audiences.
  • Global Trade Links Map:  An interactive LED table mapping major networks like the Silk Road, empowering users to trace commodity flows and routes directly to the physical archaeological evidence on display.
  • Harappan Period Installation:  A synchronized dual-screen material-selection kiosk and large wall display tracing the movement of raw materials, like carnelian and lapis lazuli, from the Sindhu-Sarasvati civilization to Mesopotamia.
  • Digital Feedback Station:  A multilingual, friction-free kiosk replacing outdated paper forms with engaging reflective prompts, seamlessly capturing real-time, structured visitor insights for museum curators.
